Sputnik Positions 2016-2017

News Editor

The News Editor is expected to have thorough knowledge of the field of local (Ward-5 Brantford) news and campus news, present strong time management skills, written skills and exhibit comfort in conducting interviews and seeking out sources. The News Editor must be organized and diligent in ensuring their section is factually correct and abiding by CP standards. They must also assist in recruiting and training volunteers and hold regular office hours each week.

 

Assistant News Editor

The Assistant News Editor is expected to have thorough knowledge of the field of local (Ward-5 Brantford) news and campus news, present strong abilities to work with a team, have good written skills and exhibit comfort in conducting interviews and working with the news writing team. The Assistant News Editor is expected to create more content than volunteer section writers in order to best aid the News Editor.

 

Features Editor

The Features Editor is expected to have thorough knowledge of their field, present strong time management skills, written skills and exhibit comfort in conducting interviews and seeking out unique sources and compelling story ideas. The Features Editor must be organized and diligent in ensuring their section is factually correct and abiding by CP standards. They must also assist in recruiting and training volunteers and hold regular office hours each week. 

 

Arts and Culture Editor

The Arts and Culture Editor is expected to have thorough knowledge of their field, present strong time management skills, written skills and exhibit comfort in conducting interviews. The A&C Editor must be organized and diligent in ensuring their section is factually correct and abiding by CP standards. They must also assist in recruiting and training volunteers and hold regular office hours each week. 

 

Sports Editor

The Sports Editor is expected to have thorough knowledge of their field of Laurier Brantford and Brantford sports, present strong time management skills, written skills and exhibit comfort in conducting interviews and attending sport events. The Sports Editor must be organized and diligent in ensuring their section is factually correct and abiding by CP standards. They must also assist in recruiting and training volunteers and hold regular office hours each week. 

 

Opinion Editor

The Opinion Editor is expected to have thorough knowledge of relevant news, present strong time management skills, written skills and exhibit comfort in conducting interviews and attending sport events. The Opinion Editor must be organized and diligent in ensuring their section is factually correct and abiding by CP standards. They must also assist in recruiting and training volunteers and hold regular office hours each week. 

 

Photo Editor

The Photo Editor is expected to have thorough knowledge of photography, photo equipment, and photo editing software (Photoshop in particular). The Photo Editor must present strong time management skills, photography skills and exhibit comfort in taking pictures in diverse settings and attending events. The Photo Editor must be organized and diligent in ensuring sections are filled and photo requests are fulfilled. They must also assist in recruiting and training volunteers and hold regular office hours each week. 

 

Lead Photographer

The Lead Photographer will not have as much of a workload as the Photo Editors, however they will still be relied upon for multiple photos every week. Whoever fills the position will need to be available to cover stories on both a planned and last minute basis. They will need to demonstrate strong communication skills. This person must also, have an existing knowledge of photography and editing,and have knowledge of multiple areas of photography (i.e. sports, speakers, staged photos, concerts, etc.).

 

Video Editor

The Video Editor must have knowledge of using camera equipment and editing software. It is the responsibility of the Video Editor to maintain the bi-weekly production of The Spud. The Video Editor must exhibit creativity in their filming and recognize the difference between more arts-based stories compared to news-based. They must also train and manage a set group of volunteers, so team management skills and communication are vital to this role. 

 

Web Editor

The Web Editor requires good time management skills, strong leadership and the ability to work with a team. This position requires the individual to be self-motivated and respectful of deadlines. Candidates for this position must convey an understanding of how The Sputnik operates and have experience in web design, and/or maintaining a Word Press site.

 

Graphics Editor

The Graphics Editor is required to show creativity and talent in producing graphics and infographics to compliment coverage in The Sputnik. They must have leadership skills to recruit and manage a team of volunteers, as well as show a strong sense of time management 

 

Copy Editors

The Copy Editors must be knowledgeable in grammar and spelling as well as CP Style. Copy Editors are required to participate in Production Night, and work closely with the EIC to ensure The Sputnik is error-free.
