WLUSP Summer Staff 2025

WLUSP has four summer positions currently open:


Advertising Assistant – Waterloo

Position Description: The WLUSP Summer Advertising Assistant will work alongside the WLUSP Advertising Manager to ensure smooth day-to-day operations of the Advertising Department. This is a full-time temporary position of 35 hours per week for 8 weeks, based at 205 Regina Street North, Waterloo, Ontario, starting May 12, 2025, and compensated at $18.00 per hour. 

Position Title: Summer Advertising Assistant 

Reports To: WLUSP Advertising Manager, WLUSP President, and WLUSP Executive Director 

Term of Office: May 12, 2025 to July 4, 2025 for 35 hours/week 

Responsibilities: 

  • Selling advertising in all WLUSP’s media properties to community businesses (both in-person sales and cold calling skills are required); 
  • Developing strong connections to advertising clients and other influential members of the community as required by the Advertising Manager; 
  • Assist in the creation of the WLU’er Student Planner; 
  • Assisting in the production and design of advertisements for print and online publications; 
  • Assisting in the production of radio advertisements; 
  • Assisting in the creation and execution of marketing initiatives;  
  • Helping to ensure that the quality of advertising products meet all standards and expectations of both WLUSP and the client;  
  • Researching and assisting in the development of business plans;  
  • Attending staff meetings and maintain communication with other staff and volunteers; 
  • Any other reasonable duties as required by the advertising manager.

Human Resources Co-ordinator

Position Description: The WLUSP HR Coordinator oversees all HR practices within WLUSP and acts as a resource for volunteers and department heads when needed. In addition to managing day-to-day HR operations, the Summer HR Coordinator will support the WLUSP President in the planning and execution of the 2025 WLUSP Summer Conference. This is a full-time temporary position of 35 hours per week for 8 weeks, based at 205 Regina Street North, Waterloo, Ontario, starting June 2, 2025, and compensated at $18.00 per hour. 

Position Title: Summer Human Resources Coordinator 

Reports To: President and Executive Director 

Term of Office: June 2, 2025 to July 25, 2025 for 35 hours/week  

Responsibilities: 

  • Assist department heads with hiring their staff and general volunteers; 
  • Oversee recruitment of volunteers on campus; 
  • Ensure orientation of new volunteers to WLUSP and their specific department; 
  • Ensure new volunteers have received an orientation package; 
  • Ensure new volunteers have read policy, signed code of conduct, like the 3C forms and any other pertinent documents; 
  • Maintain centralized volunteer files; 
  • Maintain an up-to-date mass volunteer list for WLUSP, including master volunteer lists for each department; 
  • Update WLUSP’s current policies when necessary and create new policy proposals to present to WLUSP’s Board of Directors based on the growing needs of the organization; 
  • Assist the President with discipline and termination when necessary; 
  • Assist the President in planning the annual WLUSP Summer Conference; 
  • Assist the President in organizing professional development workshops for WLUSP staff and volunteers; 
  • Act as a resource surrounding human resource issues or concerns for volunteers and staff members; 
  • Attend all staff meetings, conferences and other events as required by the President; 
  • Maintain communication with Brantford staff surrounding human resources in Brantford; 
  • Liaise with Brantford staff to ensure adherence to policy and procedures and proper file management; 
  • Ensure that departments are planning for their succession; 
  • Ensure WLUSP’s compliance with the Ontario Employment Standards, Ontario Human Rights Code, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act; 
  • Any other reasonable duties as required by the President or the Executive Director.

Production Assistant

Position Description: The WLUSP Summer Production Assistant will utilize their knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and design to assist department heads with layouts, distribution and other production requirements. They will also assist in the creation and production of the WLU’er Student Handbook. This is a full-time temporary position of 35 hours per week for 8 weeks, based at 205 Regina Street North, Waterloo, Ontario, starting June 2, 2025, and compensated at $18.00 per hour. 

Position Title: Summer Production Assistant 

Reports To:  WLUSP President, and WLUSP Executive Director 

Term of Office: June 2, 2025 to July 25, 2025 for 35 hours/week   

Responsibilities: 

  • Working with WLUSP department heads and the WLUSP President to design and produce layouts for multiple WLUSP publications, including the WLU’er student handbook;  
  • Assisting different publication teams and the WLU’er production team with new digital initiatives and creating content on WordPress;   
  • Communicating with the Advertising Manager and the advertising department regarding the positioning of advertisements, as needed;   
  • Communicating with the printer and adhering to their specifications and deadlines, as needed;   
  • Assisting with copy-edits in various WLUSP publications, including the WLU’er, as assigned by the WLUSP President;  
  • Designing other materials for WLUSP and its departments;   
  • Assisting with the creation of marketing materials for WLUSP publications and the WLU’er student guidebook, as required;   
  • Assisting with the distribution of print publications and the WLU’er, as required;   
  • Preparing office documents and other administrative tasks, if needed;   
  • Assisting The Cord Editor-in-Chief in the production of the newspaper and upkeep of thecord.ca, as required;   
  • Attending regular staff meetings and maintain communication with other staff and volunteers;  
  • Any other reasonable tasks requested by the WLUSP President.

Summer Reporter – Waterloo

Position Description: The WLUSP Summer Reporter will contribute and assist in the production of the WLUSP Publications. This is a full-time temporary position of 35 hours per week for 8 weeks, based at 205 Regina Street North, Waterloo, Ontario, starting July 1, 2025, and compensated at $18.00 per hour.  

Position Title: Summer Reporter 

Reports To: WLUSP President and WLUSP Executive Director 

Term of Office: June 30, 2025 to August 22, 2025 for 35 hours/week 

Responsibilities: 

  • Contribute content ideas for stories;  
  • Emailing and calling interview subjects to arrange interviews for upcoming stories;  
  • Preparing for and conducting interviews for stories;  
  • Reporting on and writing articles regarding on-campus and community issues as assigned by Editor-in-Chiefs of The Cord, The Sputnik and the Community Edition as well as the Station Manager of Radio Laurier;  
  • Photography and design and recording and production experience will be an asset;  
  • Updating thecord.ca and social media platforms with new content;  
  • Assisting department heads and publishers with the production of newspapers, web content and podcasts as required;  
  • Attend staff meetings and communicate with other staff and volunteer; 
  • Any other reasonable tasks assigned by the WLUSP president or executive director.

Please note that these positions are funded through the Canadian Summer Jobs grant. For applicants to be considered, they must:
